The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A replica is a casual sports watch with a second time zone function, indicated by a fourth hand, and two holes in the dial to indicate whether you are reading local time or local time. The Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) hand is independently adjustable via a push button on the left side of the case, making setup as easy as any travel time watch on the market. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time watch replica 5164/1A-001 is for sure one of our favorite Aquanauts and one that is definitely worth reviewing hands-on.
The Patek Philippe Aquanaut replica is fitted with a stainless steel case measuring 40.8 mm in diameter —0.8 mm larger than the ref. 5167 we featured here— with highly polished and satin-brushed finished areas and a slightly rounded octagonal shape. This watch is fitted with a screw-down crown and is water resistant to a 120 meters, making it a perfect companion for the pool, as you travel around Bali or Moorea.
The dial is a delicate grey-brown color that changes with the light. An arresting geosphere pattern takes center stage. It is repeated again on the 6 o’clock sub-dial. While we frequently discuss the aesthetic need for date windows, here almost a third of the dial real estate is set aside for the date.
The indices are white gold. They are filled with a generous amount of Super-Luminova. The same goes for the white gold Arabic numerals. Although the skeletonized hand is lacquered white the white gold hour and minute hands are two sharp swords filled with bright lume underlining the emphasis on legibility and a sporty vibe. A sharp needle hand takes care of the seconds, while a polished sub-dial pointer handles the date indication. It is busy. but it is beautifully crisp. It all adds up to a highly legible dial with soul.
Imagine flying across a time zone or two from, say, Paris to London. Upon landing, keep your eyes fixed onto the hour hand and push the top or bottom left side pusher. Voilà ! the hour hand jumps an hour back or ahead — revealing a ghostly skeletonized extra hour hand that remains still at your home time. Simple, yet brilliant. The now visible home time hand is fitted a hair’s breadth beneath the hour hand, so the dial remains uncluttered when not traveling. And that’s not all.
Next to 9 and 3, there are delicately cut-out windows with the sharp markings of LOCAL and HOME. These are day/night indicators that, with deceptive simplicity, rotate from a dark navy blue to white through the 24-hour cycle, indicating day or night. This effectively gives both the travel and home time indication full 24-hour legibility at a glance. Yes, the price of this simplicity is still a substantial investment for mere mortals, and you can argue that a solar G-Shock has travel time (and even lighting) for a few euros fewer. But this is something special. Actually having the chance to feel it working on your wrist makes all the difference…
When the owner moves to another time zone, the hour hand for 'local' time —travel time— can be adjusted in one-hour steps with the pushers on the left caseband. While the top pusher advances the independent travel time hand, the one below, backs it. On eastbound trips toward the sun, the local-time hand must be adjusted counterclockwise and incremented in the opposite direction when traveling westbound. The skeleton hour hand is not affected by such corrections and continues to display 'home time'. Lastly, with the end user in mind, Patek Philippe added a date corrector at 4 o'clock to ease the date setting operation.
The movement inside the Patek Philippe 5164A imation is the caliber 324 S C F US, which is built atop the caliber 324 S C, that you will find not only in the larger Aquanaut model, but also the 5711 Nautilus - which of course prompts us to wonder "why not put this new travel-time caliber in the Nautilus?" That's another question for another day, and this movement is finished as beautifully as you would expect any Patek movement to be - which is to say, it's absolutely gorgeous.
Caliber 324 S C FUS has 294 parts, 29 jewels, and a power reserve of 45 hours. It's interesting to note that this is same power reserve as found in the non travel-time movement (324 S C) - one would expect the fourth hand and home/local apertures to take up at least some power. But, these are automatic watches meant to be worn every day, so a power reserve isn't a huge deal either way.
The strap on this Patek Philippe Aquanaut replica is composite rubber that Patek calls "Tropical." I'm not sure if that is an allusion to the "Tropic" straps found on many 1960s dive watches, or if there is any technical similiarties here. Either way, the strap does its job and looks the part. On the underside, you will find an Aquanaut double deployant clasp.
